Many businesses, irrelevant of sector, face the same problem that in certain seasons and economic times, business can be slow. More importantly this brings around a cash flow problem which can handicap small to medium size businesses where having a steady cash flow is essential. Everyone knows that in business there is always some sort of a risk element and many businesses shy away from vital decision making because they believe the risk to be too high. The risk in question is investing time and money into marketing a business when business is slow.

Many business owners, especially in the desperate economic situation at the moment, invest all their time and efforts into work that they already have to bring in the money that it secures. This is a false economy, of course one must finish the work agreed however to keep ticking over for the years to come, one needs to invest time and money into future work.

For many businesses November through to February can be especially hard as consumers are focused on the festive season and unless you  are involved in the retail sector, they aren’t thinking about or engaging in other business sectors.  This is therefore the perfect opportunity to start preparing your marketing campaigns for the “good months”. By doing this, you will secure business that will give you enough of a cash flow to be able to deal with the “bad” months.

It is not uncommon for a small business owner to see the benefits of a website to help market their business, however they do not invest enough of their time into it and instead of a website being built in a month, it can take up to a year. Also many business owners outsource the building of a website to friends, family or even worse free websites builders. This can be devastating as it means that the website can take much longer to build “as it is free” but also it can be a detriment to your business. For example the graphics might not be up to scratch and there is nothing that can help search engines to find you. Cheap websites are similar because again you get what you pay for. The best way to combat this situation is to shop around different web and hosting providers and read up a little on what is makes “good website”, which isn’t always just looking pretty.

Marketing directly during the slower months might not be very successful as it can be a wasted effort, so use the time and money to build up future campaigns which can be used when business is relevant. Find a good printing shop and graphics designer and start setting up a campaign for the year. For example flyers and brochures specific to times of the year and promotional offers. It is always good to be prepared so that you can be sure the money and time invested in well educated and thought out. You will be ready for any eventuality as well i.e. you wont be put in a situation where you will be rushing around where errors usually occur.

Having a good, finished website with good branding and marketing strategy in place for when business is likely to be busy again,  your business will succeed and carry the burden for when the slow months come back again. Don’t handicap your business, invest when business is slow.
